Truphone

Truphone Mobile Voip is an application for mobile phones that lets you call other Truphone users, and Skype and Google Talk users, for free over a wi-fi network. It also gives cheap international call rates, and when abroad you can avoid expensive roaming charges by accessing a wi-fi network. The software works worldwide, whatever country you’re in, and turns your iPod Touch into a phone.
You can save money by making cheap international calls to landlines and mobiles, and if you don’t have access to a wi-fi network, you can still save on international calls as Truphone will route the international part of your call over the internet – you pay for the local part of your call and a low cost rate for the international part.
You can download the software and make free calls without registering, but in order to top up so that you can use the other services you need to register.
Truphone Calling Rates
There is a choice of subscribing to monthly packages or going with the basic TruStandard option. With TruStandard there is no subscription, you simply have access to cheap international call rates as well as the free calls to Truphone, Skype and Google Talk users. At the time of writing that’s 3p or 5.1c per minute to all countries.
The subscription packages give you cheaper international mobile phone rates with savings of up to 60% on the standard rates. TruSaver is the most basic subscription and costs £2.50 or $4 per month. There is no contract and you can cancel at any time.
TruUnlimited
With TruUnlimited you pay £17 per month and get unlimited international mobile calls to landline phones in 38 countries and unlimited calls to mobile phones in 9 countries (including the USA and China). There are no restrictions on the time of day you can call and the deal covers all days of the week.
The maximum length of a call is 60 minutes and the total monthly usage limit is 3,000 minutes.
The Truphone website gives up-to-date information on the countries that are included in the TruUnlimited Plan, but some examples are UK, USA, Canada, Australia, most western European countries, Israel and Argentina.
Free IM with Truphone
Truphone software lets you IM your friends on Skype, Google Talk, AIM, MSN and Yahoo! for free. This means being able to stay in touch with all your friends and relatives on different systems all from the one Truphone application. Of course, you can also send your Twitter updates too.
Compatibility
Truphone Mobile Voip is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, Nokia, and Android. Truphone Anywhere is compatible with the iPhone, Android, Nokia, BlackBerry, and the IM facility works with the iPhone, iPod Touch and Android.
Not all Nokia phones are compatible, so please check out the Truphone website to make sure your Nokia phone is compatible before downloading the software. Also the Truphone VoIP calling (Wi-Fi calls) is not available with all of the supported Nokia devices. Again the Truphone website has the latest information.
Truphone for the BlackBerry is still in beta and is therefore not available in all countries. There is a list on the Truphone website giving the latest countries where it will work on the Blackberry. Click the link as if you were going to download the software and you will find a link to the list.
The Truphone website gives a very good breakdown by each device that it works with. For example, if you have an iPhone you can quickly see how the application will work and how to install it.

Truphone Local Anywhere
Local Anywhere for mobiles has just been launched – it’s a SIM card which comes with low cost global roaming rates and low cost international calls rates. There are three choices: Starter Pack, US Holiday Pack and UK/US Pro Pack. The Starter Pack is £14.99, with the others costing £29.99 and £79.99. All the cards come with different amount of phone credit already included (and you can top up easily), as well as a UK number and UK local rates.
Truphone Business Solutions
The Truphone business solution is shortly to be launched in the US and UK and will enable the same money saving wi-fi phone calls for business users.
