Mootel offers cheap international phone calls from both landlines and mobile phones in the UK. They cover many worldwide destinations, have competitive rates and various ways to dial, pay and top-up your account. This service can’t be used for making national calls within the UK, only international calls from the UK.

How to make cheap international calls using Mootel

1. With Mootel’s Instant Dial service there is no need to open an account, as you will be invoiced through your existing telephone bill. Simply use the access number for the country you want to dial followed by your international number.

You will hear a message before you’re connected letting you know how much per minute you will be charged by Mootel. You will pay the cost of a local call to your existing telecom provider (e.g. BT) for the connection to the Mootel network.

This service is also available when dialling from a mobile, but you need to check with your mobile provider what the charge will be for the connection to the Mootel network on 08- or 09- numbers. This could be free of charge if you have free minutes in your mobile package.

2. The Text and Talk service allows you to top up your mobile phone by sending a text to 80556 which tops up your account with £5. You can then make calls using either the 0208 497 1007 or 0800 619 1007 numbers. If you want to top up a smaller amount: text 84459 to top up £3 and 80876 to top up £1.50.

You will be charged the £5, £3 or £1.50 to your mobile phone bill and you can use the credit on any mobile or landline by using an access number.

The service will automatically topup again once your credit has expired, so If you want to stop your subscription for the Text and Talk service, text “STOP” to the relevant number: 80556 / 84459 / 80876.

3. You can also top up your mobile phone using PayPal. Just go to the Mootel website and click on PayPal Top UP. Then enter your mobile phone number and the amount of credit you want to purchase.

Charges on the 0800 numbers

There are no hidden charges with Mootel, such as subscription costs or registration fees, but there are charges when calling the 0800 numbers. The surcharge is 1p per minute (10p per minute if you call from a payphone). This type of call also incurs a connection charge, which is equal to the rate per minute of the destination your calling. A disconnection charge between 01-20p applies to each successful call.

The 0800 numbers seem only to be provided on the Text and Talk service, but you are always given an alternative number to dial, so these fees can be avoided.

The Mootel website is easy to use, gives full information on prices per minute (you will also hear the cost per minute after you dial each access number), as well as useful information such as the international dialling codes.
