Online calling cards from Pingo are available for most countries for domestic and international dialing. Their rates are very competitive, particularly when using their online ‘Soft Phone’ method rather than access numbers. Clear and easy-to-use website and you can purchase virtual calling cards from as little as $5.

You need to create an account to use the service but this gives you access numbers in many countries and the use of the Pingo SoftPhone service, where you initiate your call online from any phone you choose. On the Pingo website, choose the country you’re dialing from followed by the country you want to call, and you are given call rates for landline and mobile phones, including the rates for different networks in the destination country.

Review of Pingo

The next step is to choose the number of minutes you want to purchase, the options range from $5 to $100. You can choose to be billed in US dollars, CAD dollars, Euros or GB pounds, but you can view call rates in many currencies.

Once you’ve opened your account and purchased credit (by credit card or PayPal), search their website for the access number for your country. Dial the Pingo access number for the country that you are in, and then simply follow the instructions… enter your account number and pin number, followed by the telephone number you want to dial, ending with the hash (#) key. However, you can shorten this whole process by using the Pingo speed dial service which means you only dial two numbers (that’s digits, not phone numbers).

You can make a second call by pressing the # key rather than hanging up – after two minutes of finishing your phone conversation, press # then dial your new number without hanging up.

Pingo has various offers at the moment including bonuses of extra credit when you top up, and there is 50% off all calls made on a Wednesday after two month’s use of the service.

You can top up your account online at the Pingo website or subscribe to their auto top up service so that you never run out of credit.

Pingo’s Soft Phone

Pingo’s cheapest rates are offered with the Pingo Soft Phone service rather than using the access number method. Soft Phone operates by using your computer to make a call from your phone. There’s no software to download, however to use the software online you must have a PC with Internet Explorer 6 or later, FireFox 2 or later, Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Vista. Not supported for Macs.

Pingo’s EZ Dial for Mobiles

This is a dialler application that runs on your mobile phone and lets you make cheap international calls over the Pingo network using your contact list, saving you time by not having to enter account numbers or pin numbers. It only works when you call internationally, as the software recognises the international number code and routes the call through the Pingo network.

Extra fees

The only extra fees you will incur if you use Pingo are: a monthly maintenance fee if you are within the USA of 0.98 cents; a surcharge if you call from a pay phone or public phone; and calls made from mobile phones outside the USA will incur an additional charge, but this is clearly shown in the Pinto Rate Watcher if applicable.
