Cheap phone call providers...
Skype for Mobile
• Use This Service To Call: Internationally.
It’s possible to make cheap voip telephone calls using Skype directly from your mobile phone, and that means phone calls to other Skype users at the cost of a local call wherever they are in the world and cheap international calls to landline numbers. Simply download Skype Lite™ to your mobile phone. For a review of Skype’s standard computer VoIP service visit our VoIP section.
Go to the Skype website and either download Skype Lite or Windows mobile phone (depending on the mobile device you have). However, this service is not yet available worldwide but limited to certain countries. Check out the Skype website for the up-to-date list of countries available.
With Skype Lite on your mobile device you DON’T have to be in a wifi network in order to make calls via Skype from your mobile.
NB. If your country of residence isn’t listed for use by Skype mobile, check out our other mobile service reviews as there are other services worldwide that offer VoIP applications for mobile phones, such as Vopium.
How does Skype Lite™ work?
When you have Skype Lite on your mobile you use your normal service provider to access the Skype network, so you pay for a local call with whoever is your service provider, e.g. Vodafone or Orange. Once you’ve accessed the Skype network you then pay Skype cheap rates for the remainder of the call, whether that’s an international call, a national call, or a call to another mobile phone.
To make any call you will pay your normal service provider the cost of a local call, even if you are calling a Skype contact, and that includes sending instant messages and receiving calls from Skype contacts. That said, you’re still going to save a lot of money using Skype on your mobile.
Download Skype Lite or Windows mobile phone
You can use Skype Lite to call phones, including mobiles or any of your Skype contacts in the following countries only: Australia, Brazil (Rio de Janeiro & Sao Paulo), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, New Zealand, Romania, Poland, Sweden, the United States and the UK.
Using Skype on your Mobile when Abroad
Be careful using this system when you’re travelling overseas as you will incur roaming charges from your normal mobile service provider which will most probably make using Skype in this instance too expensive.
Skype Enabled Mobile Phones (Skype Built-in)
You can buy Skype enabled mobile phones through the 3 network if you want to pay-as-you-go or you can get a free mobile if you sign a contract for a minimum of six months. These phone offers are only available in certain countries.
Using a ‘Skype to Go Number’ to Make Cheap Calls
With a ‘Skype to Go’ number you can make great savings on international calls. You call your own Skype to Go number from your mobile phone. Skype then gives you the option to choose from one of your phone contacts that you’ve previously set up, and you then access international calls at cheap Skype rates.
You can buy a Skype to Go number, or if you subscribe to one of Skype’s subscription packages you get one included. If you don’t have a subscription you need to make sure you have enough credit to phone.
Skype to Go numbers are only available in certain countries, and you will be charged by your normal phone service provider for the local call to your Skype to Go number. After that, your call is billed by Skype at their rates.
Skype for the iPhone and iPod Touch
If you have either of these Apple devices you can also use Skype to access low cost calls to other mobile phones and landlines and better still make those free calls to other Skype users. You must be in a wifi zone in order for all this to function, to have credit if you are a pay-as-you-go Skype user, or have a Skype subscription package. You will also be able to see which of your friends or family are online, and send chat messages to them for free, just as if you where at your computer.
More mobile devices for Skype
Skype is also now available for the PlayStation Portable 2000 and 3000 series and the Nokia Intenet Tablet.
Skype Wifi Phones
Wifi phones are portable phones (not mobile phones) that come with Skype built-in. They are not mobile phones; they can only be used within a wifi zone to make calls using Skype. Using a Skype wifi phone enables you to use Skype just as if you were in front of your computer, except it’s from the portable phone wherever you happen to be, as long as you have a wifi internet connection.
Check out Skype’s website for a list of compatible handsets for Skype Lite.
