With Skype on your mobile phone you can make free Skype to Skype calls, IM, and make cheap phone calls to other phones. To make free Skype to Skype calls you need to be within a wi-fi zone. Use Skype over 3G to make cheap phone calls to landlines and mobiles, for this you need to have Skype credit or a subscription package.

Skype recommend that you have an unlimited data plan with your mobile phone carrier, so that you don’t incur extra charges on 3G if you go over your limit, so you have that cost to build into the equation too. Otherwise you need a WiFi connection. However, data calls are much cheaper than mobile network calls and using Skype on your mobile device will save you money.

Go to the Skype website and download Skype by simply giving your mobile phone number. If you already have a Skype account you will automatically see all your contacts when it’s loaded. Skype for the mobile is available for Symbian (Nokia phones), and there is a full list on the Skype website of compatible devices. It’s also available for the iPhone.

With Skype on your mobile device you DON’T have to be in a wifi network in order to make calls via Skype from your mobile.

How does Skype work on your mobile phone?

When you have Skype on your mobile you use your normal service provider to access the Skype network.
Once you’ve accessed the Skype network you then pay Skype’s cheaper rates for the remainder of the call, whether that’s an international call, a national call, or a call to another mobile phone.

Skype to Skype calls are free, as they are when calling from a computer, as well as Instant Messaging, as long as you are within a free wi-fi zone.

(Skype Lite and Windows mobile phone are no longer available, although if you already have these services they will continue to be supported).

Skype for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Skype works exactly the same on the iPhone. For the iPod Touch you need to be within a wi-fi zone.

Using Skype on your Mobile when Abroad

When abroad this system can save you on roaming charges if you are within a wifi zone. If not, you will pay roaming charges as you will need to make the first part of the call, as usual, via your mobile phone provider’s network.

Skype Wifi Phones

Wifi phones are portable phones (not mobile phones) that come with Skype built-in. They are not mobile phones; they can only be used within a wifi zone to make calls using Skype. Using a Skype wifi phone enables you to use Skype just as if you were in front of your computer, except it’s from the portable phone wherever you happen to be, as long as you have a wifi internet connection.

I was just wondering how much Skype mobile could cost in the long run without a data plan. Do voice-only conversations use a lot of bandwidth?

You will pay the cost of a connection to your mobile provider (check with your provider what they will be) for 3G or WiFi, then the cost for the remainder of the call is billed by Skype. Skype recommend an unlimited 3G plan so as not to go over your limit and incur extra charges.
