SMSdiscount is a voice over IP service that comes with many features including being able to use your landline phone to make calls. You need to download and install their VOiP software to your PC and then you can access their cheap calling rates and for some countries calling is completely Free. Services include: compatibility with many SIP devices, your own VoIP in number, a good range of VoIP devices which you can purchase from SMSdiscount direct, phone to phone dialing (although you do need to initiate calls from your computer), and local access numbers.
The standard VoIP service works as usual - you need a headset and mic, download their software and you can call other SMSdiscount users for free and dial from your computer to other landlines and mobiles (cell phones) to save money on national and international calls. Certain countries are completely free to dial, check out SMSdiscount’s rate page on their website to find out which countries apply. Current countries where you can make free international phone calls are Russia, Peru, Poland and Portugal.
The catch to being able to make free calls is that you have to purchase credit first, otherwise calls to the free countries will incur a charge. However, the credit you purchase does not have a expiry limit.
The SMSdiscount software is only PC compatible, but if you are a Mac or Linux user you can get round that by installing one of the Softphone applications.
You can configure your own SIP device to work with SMSdiscount and their website comes with technical instructions on how to do that.
Phone to Phone Service
Their phone to phone service works by first entering the phone number you wish to dial from, then the phone number you want to call in the SMSdiscount software. Each name in your contact list will have a phone to phone icon next to it, so if you wish to dial a contact it’s a one click procedure. You will pay exactly the same rates as the regular VoIP calls. Calls are charged by the minute.
The SMSdiscount website comes in two languages, Spanish and English but it can easily be translated into several different languages by using the Google Translations Gadget at the top of their page.
