Talkety is a telecom network provider offering very cheap rates for international calls. Calls are initiated online by entering your own telephone number (landline or mobile) and your destination number – your phone will then ring and you will be connected. You can phone almost any country in the world with Talkety.
You must register in order to use the service and Talkety will call you back to verify your telephone number and ask you to enter a code generated on the website. Add credit to your account and you can start to make cheap international phone calls. Because you start the calls from the website, there is no software to download and no other equipment needed other than your existing telephone.
The Talkety website lists phone rates very clearly, so you can check out exactly what you will be billed before dialling. To phone Australia from the UK costs $0.025 or 0.017€ per minute (at the time of writing), that’s pretty cheap. When you initiate a call online you will also be shown the call rate and your credit balance.
The service comes with an online address book so you can store your contact phone numbers for easy dialling.
There are some nifty tools offered here too, such as a Firefox extension, an Apple Dashboard Widget, an Apple iSync Plugin, Apple Address Book plugin and a Microsoft Outlook plugin.
The one restriction is that Talkety only seem to accept payment made with Visa for the pay-as-you-go account.
Testing Talety’s Service for an International Call
Talkety generously gave me some credit in order to test their service, and I’m now regularly using Talkety because it’s so good, easy to use and extremely cheap. I’ve been calling to the UK from Spain. I had one instance where the call initiated online failed to connect and my phone didn’t ring, but no credits were deducted and on the second attempt the call went through. The call quality is very good and I’ve even had comments from people that I’ve called saying that the call quality is better than my usual VoIP calls.
Talkety Pro Version
Talkety offer a Pro version of their service, which gives you additional features such as allowing you to pay by invoice rather than pre-paying, and conference calls with up to 50 people. There is a minimum call volume to run the Pro account of 10 credits.
