Cheap phone call providers...

telfree

Use This Service To Call: Internationally

telfree’s new app for mobile phones gives you cheap mobile phone calls by bypassing your mobile service provider. There is a set rate for all calls to mobiles anywhere in the world and another set rate for landlines worldwide. SMS rates are also very cheap worldwide and that’s all in with the free package.

Subscribe to the Professional or Ultimate package and you get even cheaper calls, push technology to be able to accept calls even when the app is switched off, and an incoming number (if there is one available in your country). What’s more, you can try it for free for 30 days without any contractual obligations.

How telfree works

With the telfree app loaded on your mobile device you can make calls via wi-fi or 3G networks. You can make calls to other telfree users, mobile phones and landline phones. If you subscribe to the Ultimate package calls to other telfree users are free.

Because the service is worldwide it removes the expense of roaming charges.

SMS

telfree dialler

Just using telfree for your text messaging will save you money as their set rate worldwide is cheap, even with the free account. At the time of writing this review the charge for an sms to any country is €0.08 and with the free account this reduces to €0.06. All packages let you receive sms.

Social networking

The telfree app supports all the popular social networks and IM platforms such as Facebook, Skype, Google Talk and MSN. You get unlimited chat to all your social networking contacts.

Push technology

The push technology is only available if you subscribe to the Ultimate package (at the time of writing this is €12.99 per month). Basically this means that even if the telfree app is switched off you can still receive an incoming call. You can make calls to other telfree users when they are offline.

The main benefit of the Ultimate package is that you can receive calls to your telfree account because you are given an incoming number (not available in all countries yet).

Mobile phone compatibility

telfree works on many mobile handsets including the following: N-Series and E-Series Nokia phones, Nokia XpressMusic, iPhone, iPod Touch (wi-fi only), iPad, Windows Mobile: HTC, Windows Mobile: Samsung Omnia. See the telfree website for a full list of all compatible devices.

Any other costs

All telfree costs are clearly stated on their website and if you subscribe to the package you can see exactly what you will be paying for calls and sms.

However, you will pay your existing mobile provider for your connection to the internet in order to use the telfree service. These rates vary and you need to contact your current mobile provider to find out exactly what they are.

telfree can be used over 3G and wi-fi so you need to find out the costs for both. If you have a package with your existing mobile provider this data transfer may well be within your agreed limit.

If you don’t have a package it may well be worth buying or subscribing to a data package bundle with your current mobile provider in order to use telfree; you need to weigh up the costs and decide which is most cost effective. Remember if you’re within a free wi-fi area you won’t be charged for data transfer.

The telfree website is full of instructions, including screenshots to help you use the software and there is a support section and forum too.

Registration required? Yes, you have to register.
