A VoIP application that lets you make cheap international phone calls from your mobile phone. Vopium boast savings of up to 90% on calls. Can only be used in certain countries: Australia (beta version), Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand (beta version), Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and US.
To use the service, you must first register your mobile phone by signing up online or sending an SMS to Vopium. You will then receive a link to visit in order to download the application. On signing up you get 30 minutes free call time, after using your free minutes, you need to purchase credit in order to continue.
There are no monthly fees, no set-up charges, and you download the Vopium program directly to your mobile / cell phone. The software is compatible with over 500 handsets and with iPhone, Symbian, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and Java.
How you save money on mobile phone calls and SMS
When you dial an international number from your mobile phone your call is re-routed through the Vopium gateway and you only pay for a local phone call with your normal mobile provider. You can send cheap sms in the same way.
It’s also possible to use Vopium when travelling as the software will automatically choose the cheapest gateway for your calls. You pay your mobile airtime provider for a roaming local call then either Vopium’s rates or another provider’s rates if they are cheaper for the international part of the call.
It’s possible to top-up your credit directly from your mobile phone, and you can request a credit balance for free. Vopium will tell you if you don’t have sufficient credit before making a call.
