Vyke
Use This Service To Call: 20+ countries.
Vyke is a voip app for mobile phones that also works on the Blackberry. With Vyke’s mobile voip you can make cheap international calls from your mobile, and, as usual with voip, you can make free Vyke to Vyke calls as long as you are in a WiFi zone (direct from your mobile). Call rates to fixed lines start at 2c (US) per minute. Vyke also have the standard Voip app for the PC which you can use worldwide – the mobile voip app only works in certain countries.
Vyke on the Blackberry
Vyke works on all Blackberries running operating systems 2.1 - 5.0, but not all features are available. You can’t make calls directly, you have to use the Callback feature, which basically means sending a request to set up a call and wait for Vyke to call you back and connect you. But this is still a way of making significant savings, especially on roaming charges if you’re overseas.
Wi-Fi Calls
If you are within a wifi zone you can make free wi-fi calls to other Vyke users, or you can make wi-fi calls to landlines and mobile at a much cheaper rate because you are calling via the Vyke voip network and not using your mobile airtime. If you’re overseas and within a wi-fi zone you will not incur any roaming charges.
Not in a Wi-Fi zone
You can still make cheap mobile phone calls even if you’re not in a wifi zone. Vyke call this ‘Callthrough’. When you call an international phone number with Vyke outside of wifi, you will pay the cost of a local call to your normal phone provider, but Vyke will then route the international part of your call through their system and it will be charged at Vyke’s cheaper rates.
If you have a mobile contract that includes a certain number of inclusive minutes you will not incur any cost until those inclusive minutes have been used up.
Callthrough is not available in every country. At the time of writing, this is the list of countries where Vyke is supported: Bahrain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA and the United Kingdom. Please check the Vyke website for additions to this list.
Callthrough will not save you on roaming charges, as the first part of the call is always charged by your mobile provider, but Callthrough can save you a lot of money on international calls from your home country. Using Vyke’s mobile wifi calling (as described above) you will avoid roaming charges.
Vyke is not yet (30 Sept 2010) available for the iPhone, but they’re working on it.
Callback
Vyke also have a Callback service. Using your data connection on your mobile you can instruct Vyke to initiate a call. Vyke will set up the connection and call your mobile, when you answer your call will be connected. You save money by using a data connection and Vyke’s network. Callback is not available in all countries, please see the Vyke website for a list of countries that support Callback.
Vyke on your computer
Vyke also have a standard voip application that runs on a PC (not Mac compatible), and when you sign up you get some free credit to make a call.
SMS
SMS between Vyke users are completely free, and to other mobile phones the rates are 9c (US) per message anywhere in the world.
