To celebrate Chinese New Year Localphone.com is giving free calls to China for four days starting on 22nd January 2012. The free calls apply to standard landline and mobile calls and is available to current Localphone customers as well as new customers.

The calls are free from 16:00 GMT on Saturday 21st January to 16:00 GMT on Wednesday 25th January 2012, which is midnight 22nd - midnight 25th in China.

Use your Skype credit to pay for WiFi access. This is a great app from Skype that allows you to connect to certain paid WiFi networks in public places such as hotels, airports and restaurants, etc, but at a Skype rate. It’s usable worldwide with over 1 million WiFi hotspots accessible.

Skype’s rates start at 4 pence per minute, which is much less that your roaming costs would be if abroad, and less than a lot of paid WiFi connects in hotels and airports. Also great for those with an iPod Touch that doesn’t have other network options.

When you launch the app it will show you a list of available WiFi networks. You pay by the minute and only for the amount of minutes you use. When you establish the connection Skype reserves enough of your credit for 30 minutes – but if you only use 10 minutes that’s all you will be billed for. If you forget to sign out, the app will automatically disconnect after 30 minutes.

Localphone now have an iPhone app. Localphone is a great service for making cheap international phone calls to both landlines and mobiles.

With the new app you can access your contacts and call rates on the move and make calls more easily directly from your iPhone as well as sending cheap SMS.

Localphone give you a local number for each or your contacts, so you can make a locally charged phone call directly from your mobile or landline phone and reach your friends and family overseas for a fraction of the usual cost.

As of January 2012 Localphone have updated their iPhone app, and new features include:

Two calling modes – WiFi/3G or local numbers
Using the LOCAL call mode means calls are made using a local number which connects to the international contact so you pay Localphone’s low rates plus the mobile provider’s local rates (which are often included in free minutes). By tapping the call mode during a call you can switch to WiFi/3G mode and calls will be made using the internet connection. This means you won’t have to pay the local charges just the international rate, which will save them even more money. Users can switch easily between the two call modes during a call.

Localphone are giving free calls to the US until the end of Tuesday, 31st May.

If you already have an account with Localphone your US calls will automatically be free, and if you don’t have an account with Localphone I recommend you open one. Not only will you be able to take advantage of these free calls, but of incredibly cheap international phone calls in the future.

Localphone give cheap international calls from landlines and mobiles worldwide. You are allocated a local number for every person you call which can be stored in your phone making dialling very easy. Rates are very competitive, and popular destinations include India, Pakistan, Australia, UK, US, China and UAE.

Open an account online to use the service and register the phone numbers you will be calling from. Once this has been done, you need to enter the country and phone number you’re calling from and the destination country and phone number. You are then allocated a localphone number for that call which remains valid and which you can save in your phone for future calls. There is no pin number, access number or software required.

Localphone is currently my personal choice for making cheap international phone calls from my landline phone and from my mobile. I’ve been using this service because of the cheap call rates to the UK and for it’s ease of use – once you’ve set up your phone numbers there’s no need to go back to their website. I’m very pleased with the service and the call quality is also very good.

Localphone can also be used when travelling or when calling from a number that’s not your own. You need to visit the Localphone website to get the local number for the area where you are, dial this number, followed by your account number, and you will be connected at the Localphone cheap call rate.

The Localphone rates are very good for international calls from landlines and mobiles. They are also very competitive with their cheap national call rates to landlines – the national calls to mobile phones are not so cheap and in some cases it’s cheaper to use your existing provider.

It’s very easy to check the call rates on the Localphone website, just enter both numbers and you will be given a cost per minute rate which can be viewed in US dollars, euros or GB pounds.

How to open an account with Localphone

Opening an account is easy and free. Go to the Localphone website and give your name, country, phone number, email address and password.

By logging into your account you can view your available credit and a full history of your calls, as well as any credits you have earned by recommending other users.

Recommend and earn credits

If you recommend someone who then opens an account with Localphone you will earn 10% of their call credit every time they top up for the next 90 days. There is an online form specially for recommending the Localphone service to friends and family.

Localphone App

Localphone now have an app for both the iPhone and Android mobiles. This means it’s even easier to dial your saved contacts, and with the app it’s very easy to dial any number saved or otherwise as you just dial directly from the Localphone app keypad and calls are routed through their system. You just need enough credit in your account to cover them, but your credit balance is clearly displayed as well as rates for the calls.

Voip Service

There is also a Localphone voip service if you want to call from your computer or if you’re in an area where there are no local numbers. And, as is usual, voip calls between Localphone users are free.

Localphone recommend X-Lite for voip on your computer and give full instructions on how to configure the software on their website.

Incoming Phone Numbers

For a small monthly fee you can buy a local telephone number in many countries and have calls to that number forwarded to your existing landline or mobile number (or a Localphone voip account).

This is a good deal for many countries, but in the UK for example, it is possible to obtain free phone numbers that can be forwarded to telephone numbers overseas at no cost whatsoever. OpenTelecom is one such service which is reviewed on this site.
