The Google Voice app, which is free to download, gives free SMS and cheap international phone calls to US residents. It works on Android, Blackberry, Nokia S60, the iPhone and a few others besides.

At the moment only US residents are able to set up a Google Voice account, which is required to run the app.

It integrates with the address book on your phone so you can easily call existing contacts, and it has push notification, so you get an alert if you have received a voicemail or SMS. Voicemail are automatically converted into text for you to read.
